Many are speculating that there will be another SoundScan battle between 50 and Kanye, similar to the one that took place last year when the two released albums on the same day, September 11. West solidly won that battle, and another could be in the offing, as 50 has December 9 slated for his Before I Self-Destruct LP, and Kanye is reported to be releasing his album on the 16th — although those release dates could easily be shifted to the same day.

"If the [iTunes music store] was forced to absorb any increase in the ... royalty rate, the result would be to significantly increase the likelihood of the store operating at a financial loss — which is no alternative at all," Cue wrote. "Apple has repeatedly made it clear that it is in this business to make money, and most likely would not continue to operate [the iTunes music store] if it were no longer possible to do so profitably." Apple's share of the digital music market continues to hover over the 75 percent mark — and is expected to top 85 percent this year — but its profit margin on iTunes sales is thin, and an executive told Fortune that he had no doubt an increase in prices per track would result in fewer total purchases from the store. Apple pays around 70 cents per track to the record companies, and those companies turn over 9 of those cents to the music publishers who control the copyrights on those songs.

And all of that either proves that Axl Rose is: A) a genius; B) a prognosticator; or C) the rock-and-roll version of T. Boone Pickens, because he's seemingly omnipresent, insanely wealthy, kind of creepy and is trying to pitch you something that seems legit, except you can't shake the lingering feeling that you're being conned, because, well, the dude's an oil baron (you know, that and his ties to the whole Swift Boat thing). Either way, he's terrifying. He's going to bring society to its knees. He's going to change the world forever.

"He says that because he doesn't have a record to defend himself. We've become accustomed in our politics to folks just being able to make stuff up — it's one of the few areas of public life where the standards somehow are lowered in terms of what you say about other people," he continued. "For example, he suggested that I'm talking about raising everybody's taxes, when every analyst has shown I'm actually calling for a tax cut for 95 percent of [American] families."

The only non-rap artist being celebrated is Isaac Hayes, and while the late musician never spit a bar, his work helped inspire many MCs. From the Notorious B.I.G.'s "Warning" to the Geto Boys' "Mind Playing Tricks on Me," Black Moses had a lasting effect on hip-hop.
